The WAD's Drinking the Kool-Aid

Fresh from the WAD himself, yet another completely moronic argument:

Lay off Grossman. He had a tough game. Doesn't change the fact that he is sooooooooo much better than about 20 other quarterbacks in the NFL.Actually, for sh*ts and giggles, lets take a look at Rex's first year as a full time starter and compare it to some of the all time greats:

Rex: 3,200 yards, 54.6% completion percentage, 23 T.D.'s, 20 picks,15 wins and a Super Bowl loss;

Elway: 2,600 yards, 56.3% completion percentage, 18 T.D.'s, 15 picks,13 wins and a loss in the Divisional Round of the Playoffs;

Montana: 1,800 yards, 64.5% completion percentage, 15 T.D.'s, 9 picks,6 - 10 record;

Marino: 5,084 yards, 64.2% completion percentage, 48 T.D.'s, 17picks, and a Super Bowl loss;

Kelly: 3,593 yards, 59.4% completion percentage, 22 T.D.'s, 17 picks,and a 4-12 record;

Young: 2,282 yards, 53.7% completion percentage, 8 T.D.'s, 13 picks,and 2-14 record for the Bucs.

So, let's break this down rationally: I have given you Rex's first year starting statistics and win/loss record compared with that of five First Ballot Hall of Fame quarterbacks. Of those five, he had more yards than3 of them (Elway, Montana, and Young), A comparable completion percentage to two of them (Elway & Young), More touchdowns than all of them except Marino (by the way, Marino's season was possibly the greatest quarterbacking season in the history of the league), More picks than all of them (no doubt about it, turnovers have been his Achilles heel), and he took his team as far as Marino and further than any of the other four.

Okay, if that doesn't convince you that all this media horse sh*t about how bad Grossman is is complete sh*t, take a look at his first year starting numbers against those of another First Ballot Hall of Famer,

Favre: 3,227 yards, 64.1% completion percentage, 18 T.D.\'s, 13 picks,and a 9-7 record.

So, I just have to ask: Do you think Elway, Montana, Marino, Kelly,Young, or Favre should have caught the type of crap Grossman has caught this year? The answer, of course, is NO! Because, those guys came up in an era where the quarterback was supposed to make plays and lead you to victory, not just stay out of the way and not screw up. Grossman is a throw back to a better time, and had he been given the freedom to sling it around early and often last night, who knows how things would have turned out. So, in sum, I think it\'s ludicrous the crap people give Grossman, and because of the way he plays the game, I love the guy,and I wish the media and all the people who take what the morons like Boomer Esiason, Sterling Sharp, and Michael Irvin say as Gospel would take a minute to stop and think about who they are listening to.Numbers don't lie, and numbers tell you that this kid has a chance to be one of the all time greats.

Sweet baby Jesus you must have had a ton to drink last night. Let's take a look at why your examples are useless comparisons:

Elway: There was never any doubt about Elway. The guy started from the get go and had obvious talent. Maybe the numbers weren't any better, but check out his supporting cast. Rex has better backs and receivers, hands down.

Jim Kelly had better stats than Rex. Maybe the 4-12 record had something to do with having the league's 23rd ranked total defense. Sexy Rexy got to play with the #5 total defense this year.

Hopefully we all realize there's no need to analyze the Marino comparison.

As for Montana, he completed 64.5% of his passes, with a nearly identical yard/attempt ratio as Rex. If the Niners had called more passes, his stats would be the same, but with a better TD/Int ratio.

Steve Young: First and foremost, Young's first year as a starter was his second in the league (not his fourth, like Rex). Yes his numbers weren't good, but he only played in 14 of the 16 games. Add that to the fact that he played on the Bucs, the league laughingstock at the time, and it's no surprise he threw more picks than TD's. The guy was put in desparate situations and had no choice. You also left out the fact that for the year Young rushed for 425 yards and 5 TDs. Rex ran for 2 yards and 0 TDs.

Now that we've looked at the WAD's choices, let's compare Rex to someone more recent, someone who must be bound for the HOF. That person is none other than Big Ben Roethlisburger.

In only 14 games Ben had 2600 yards, a blistering 66% completion percentage, 17 TDs and 11 picks. Over a 16 game season that would be 3000 yards, 19 TD and 13 INT. All the WAD does is rip on Ben, yet Rex is going to the HOF with comparable stats?

I think Ben v. Rex is a good comparison because the teams they play for are similar: they both have a sound defense and like to run the ball. Ben's season is much more impressive to me because he did it as a true rookie, not some 4th year benchwarmer.

In true lawyer fashion, I'll continue running this point into the ground. The WAD has also ripped Eli Manning. If you look at Eli's first year starting numbers he's better than Rex across the board: 3250 yards, 24 TD, 17 Int.

Will Eli and Ben get into the Hall at the same time as Rex?

Okay, first of all, I've never ripped Eli. I'm a HUGE Eli fan, and I wil poke your eyes out for suggesting I would rip him. He struggled down the stretch this year, but he is the future of one of the NFL's proudest franchises.

Second, Roethlisberger quietly had the breakout year I was looking for this year. Much like Brady did the season after the Pats won their first ring and then missed the playoffs, Big Ben (with the exception of the picks), grew into a guy that his team could count on to make plays and not just stay out of the way. Big Ben had the year he needed to have, and barring another stupid offseason, I think he will make the leap next year into the upper echelon of quarterbacks. Bear in mind, I've never ripped Big Ben, I've ripped the ass clowns that wanted to annoint him as great before he proved anything.

Now, as for Grossman, I'm not saying to get his bust ready in Canton, but I am saying that I think he's in the top third of quarterbacks in the league, and he's only going to get better. He's got a lazer rocket arm, he's got huge stones, and he's as arrogant as the day is long. Not to mention, he is a playmaker. He's got a chance to be great, and if the media would let go of its irrational hatred of him and let the public make up their own mind, I think people would see it the same way. It's really funny, because last year we had the most undeservedly sweated young quarterback of all time in the Super Bowl in Roethlisberger, and this year, we had a guy that had a better year, is liked and respected by his teammates, and is the most undeservedly trashed young quarterback of all time in the Super Bowl in Grossman. Sometimes I just really hate the NFL and the people that cover it.

I must admit I was hoping the Bears would win. I heard that the league had lined up Denny Green to hand out the trophy while screaming "they were what we thought they were. Go ahead, crown their asses."

Personally, i like Sexy Rexy. Mostly because of that youtube clip...

However, I think the reason he catches so much heat is because of his several 3-4+ turnover games [you are not including the numerous fumbles that he committed this season]. I can't think of any games that Big Ben lost for Pittsburgh that season, though i may be mistaken. The bears won a couple of games this season in spite of Rex and definitely lost a couple because of his miscues. I can think of at least two games that the defense literally won for him and one that Hester won. So potentially, had it not been for the Chicago D, the bears are around a 10-6 team, don't have home field advantage in the playoffs [or a bye] and possibly don't make the super bowl.

Oh, and saying Rex is in the top third of NFL qb's is not necessarily a resounding endorsement.

that said, I hope Rexy becomes the new farve...b/c it is getting harder and harder to root for #4.

WR screens are for pussies.

Fuck it, I am going deep.

Has Prince written anything new since the early 80's?

Grossman looks like Reggie Ball way too often. He's a turnover machine.

Big Ben had the year he needed to have, and barring another stupid offseason, I think he will make the leap next year into the upper echelon of quarterbacks. Bear in mind, I've never ripped Big Ben, I've ripped the ass clowns that wanted to annoint him as great before he proved anything.

Are you kidding me!?!?! You've never ripped Big Ben??? And now you think he's headed towards the upper echelon of qbs??? I'm soooo confused right now...somebody help me.

No, I've never ripped Big Ben before. I've only pointed out that Big Ben wasn't much, if any, better than average until the last seven games of the season. I RIPPED the people that were willing to claim he was great without any statistical or emperical proof, and even worse, I RIPPED the people that just took the talking heads' word for it. That's the problem with the media and sports today. EVERYBODY has an agenda to promote. For whatever reason, the media fell in love with Big Ben (big, strong, bearded qb that fit the prototypical Pittsburgh model), and they made him out to be something he wasn't and still isn't. On the other hand, the media kills a kid like Grossman because he is a brash, cocky, Spurrier disciple that says dude and "rad" too much, so they kill him. Listen, he's not perfect, but only 11 other quarterbacks threw for more yards, only 6 others threw for more touchdowns, and only one other led his team to the Super Bowl! Not to mention, unlike the dink and duck pussies that you usually find under center these days, Grossman has a sack, and he goes for broke! He could be my quarterback any day of the week and twice on Sunday.

Umm...

I am pretty sure I gave you statistical and empirical evidence that supported Big Ben last year ('05). I compared him to several hall of fame quarterbacks (in terms of average yards/game, which was your big argument, if I remember correctly) and his won-loss record spoke for itself.

that being said...if wins/losses is all we look for...Sexy Rexy is doing all right.

Again, for clarification...I am a fan of Rex. I would just have to lump myself in the "ass clowns...that were willing to claim he was great without any statistical or emperical proof" category and take issue with it.

my jersey says 8 too, but it's more like 10 or 11.
